What is a microschool?

A microschool is a small private learning environment that offers personalized instruction to children of different ages, outside the traditional school system. Many people describe it as a modern one-room schoolhouse, or as the halfway point between homeschooling and a conventional private school.

That in-between position is exactly what makes record keeping awkward. Homeschool tools assume one family. Traditional school systems assume bells, class periods, and a registrar's office. A microschool is neither, and usually has one person doing all of it.

EdPort was built for that middle ground: individual enough to follow each student's own pace, formal enough to produce the attendance records, report cards, and transcripts families eventually need.

Why microschools choose EdPort

Sized for how you actually operate

Small on purpose

Microschools are often a dozen or two students. EdPort's smallest plan is built for that, and there is no enterprise onboarding to sit through.

One person wears every hat

The founder is often the teacher, the registrar, and the administrator. Everything lives in one place instead of four spreadsheets.

Between homeschooling and traditional school

A microschool sits in the middle, and so does EdPort. Personal enough for individual progress, formal enough to produce a real transcript.

Families still need paperwork

Whatever your state asks for, parents eventually need attendance records, grades, and a transcript. Those come out as clean PDFs.

Any curriculum

Traditional, classical, mastery-based, or a mix. Define your own subjects and grading, including self-paced unit models like A.C.E.

Growing or splitting

Add students and teachers as you grow, and give each teacher access only to their own students.

Everything included

One system, every student record

Every plan includes every feature. No feature-gating between tiers — the only difference is student count.

Mixed-Age Rosters

Students at different grade levels in one room. Every record is per student, so nobody is forced into a single class-wide template.

Self-Paced Progress

Record grades per completed unit rather than per semester, so a student who finishes early is simply further along.

Attendance Tracking

Present, absent, excused, and holiday tracking with hour totals and printable summaries for your state.

Report Cards

By semester, quarter, or completed units. Letter grades or numeric scores, conduct assessments, and teacher notes.

Transcripts

Formal transcripts with GPA and credit tracking, carrying your school's name and logo.

Document Storage

Immunization records, enrollment paperwork, work samples, and portfolios organized per student.

Shared Calendar

Field trips, testing days, and closures with categories, RSVPs, and automatic email reminders.

Secure Cloud Storage

Encrypted at rest and in transit. Records follow each student across years, with nothing living on one laptop.

Frequently asked

Common questions

What is a microschool?

A microschool is a small private learning environment offering personalized instruction to a mixed-age group of students outside the traditional school system. People often describe it as a modern one-room schoolhouse, or as a halfway point between homeschooling and a conventional private school. Some operate independently, some under an umbrella school or charter.

Is EdPort too much software for a school with 15 students?

No. Pricing starts at a tier built for under 25 students, and setup is self-serve — you add students and start recording. There is no implementation fee, no contract, and a 45-day free trial with full access.

Our students all work at their own pace. Does that work?

Yes. EdPort supports a mastery model where grades are recorded per completed unit instead of per semester, and credit is earned as units are finished. That means a student who completes six units has six grades and the credit to match, rather than being averaged against a calendar.

Can we produce a real transcript for a graduating student?

Yes. EdPort generates formal transcripts with GPA calculation and credit tracking, on your school's letterhead with your logo. Families can take that to a college, a state agency, or their next school.

What if we operate under an umbrella school?

That works too. The umbrella administrator can hold the account and oversee every enrolled student, while individual teachers only see the students assigned to them.

Can we export our data if we leave?

Yes. Export CSV data anytime and print PDFs of every student's cumulative file. Your records stay yours.
